1.28.7279 Safe to install
This document provides important updates regarding the NIH Toolbox System, emphasizing that the current legacy version is scheduled for retirement in June 2028. New users are strongly advised to download the NIH Toolbox V3 application, available at https://apps.apple.com/us/app/nih-toolbox-v3/id1627119550. Users engaged in studies extending beyond June 2028 should plan to transition to the newer version prior to the scheduled retirement. Please note that the annual subscription fee for the app will increase annually until its decommissioning.
Hardware Compatibility Notice: It is recommended to use iPads manufactured from 2018 onward with screens measuring between 9.7 and 11 inches. Data collected on iPads with 12.9-inch screens has yet to be validated and should be interpreted with caution.
NIH Toolbox® encompasses a comprehensive suite of performance-based and self-report measures designed to evaluate cognitive, emotional, motor, and sensory functions in individuals aged 3 to 85. Developed by a team of over 250 scientists over six years and supported by the NIH Neuroscience Blueprint across its 15 institutes, this update features improved workflows and an enhanced user interface for more than 50 tests. It can be deployed independently or integrated into broader assessment protocols. The app facilitates standardized measurement across diverse domains, enabling researchers to use a common metric and perform data "crosswalks," which are crucial for aggregating data from varied sources and large, heterogeneous samples.
While many core features of NIH Toolbox are accessible without subscription, the ability to record responses as well as view and export results requires a subscription purchased within the app, applicable on up to ten iPads. Subscriptions will automatically renew unless canceled at least 24 hours before the current billing period ends. Cancellation policies are subject to Apple’s discretion.
Users can benefit from a trial period at no cost; however, data saving and result generation are disabled during this phase. Once a subscription is purchased, the trial period is forfeited. Subscription management can be conducted through your Apple Account Settings post-purchase.
All necessary materials for administering NIH Toolbox assessments are embedded within the application, though some tests may require supplementary hardware or materials. To access comprehensive administration and technical manuals, supplemental resources, and publication lists, users should create a free account at www.NIHToolbox.org.
Upon subscription purchase, immediate access is provided to tests within the Emotion, Motor, and Sensation domains. Tests within the Cognition domain require additional approval via www.NIHToolbox.org; this approval process is included in the subscription fee and does not necessitate an extra purchase. Typically, eligibility for approval is granted to researchers and clinicians equipped with appropriate neuropsychological training. For further information, please contact [email protected].
Data Security and Intended Use:
- The NIH Toolbox is intended solely for research and clinical purposes; it is not approved for use outside these contexts.
- Users have control over data management options, including enabling or disabling data export via iCloud, email, or File Sharing within the app.
- If iCloud is active on your device, you may opt to upload data exports directly to an iCloud Drive folder. Refer to Apple’s privacy policies for detailed information on data security.
- Data exports (.csv format) and assessment reports (.PDF format) may be transmitted via email; secure email channels are recommended to maintain confidentiality.
